Agatha bit her lip in concentration as she carefully measured eye of newt extract into the cauldron on the kitchen table in front of her. “No, Bart. Leave it.” She elbowed her curious familiar away from the cauldron.
“Are you still doing your homework?” Agatha’s mother called from the living room over the roar of the vacuum. “You better not just be playing with that mangy cat.”
“Yes, I’m doing my homework.” Agatha rolled her eyes with a long suffering sigh; You get one D in spell-craft, and they never let you forget it. She reached for the next ingredient, a pungent herb that made her eyes water whenever she had to use it.
“Ka-choo!” Bart flinched as he sneezed, knocking her wand off the table. Agatha tried to catch it, but it fell between her fingers and hit the tile floor with a clatter just as Bart knocked over the cauldron with a swish of his tail.
The slimy potion ran between Bart’s furry magical toes and dripped over the edge of the table onto the fallen wand. With a flash of chartreuse light, Agatha’s half-finished spell activated.
When the smoke cleared, the entire kitchen was covered in yellow feathers. Every single drawer, appliance and utensil. Agatha sighed deeply. Now she’d have to fix this, plus start the original spell all over again.
The sound of the vacuum paused. “Agatha, what was that?”
“Nothing, Mom.” Agatha leaned down to pick up her wand and start again.
